The path to the sword on the walkthru doesn't work, I'm afraid to leave the area because I won't be able to get back to it. Has anyone make it to sword? Please tell me how you did it.

It does work - enter the path and just keep trying to go up, down, left and right. The path is long and twisted, but you do get to the chest you can see, and the Thanatos Sword.

PS: Note that if you have an imported game, the Arari Bow is even better for Wendala
