In case anybody has the same problem with the warps in the Mirror Maze, I've figured out the problem. In the Guide, Warps 24 and 25 are incorrectly described.
Warp 25 takes you to the room with mirrors.
Warp 24 takes you to the room with the death tag; you need to walk through a wall to get there (and to Warp 26, & etc.

Does Joe get any abilities past level 70? Wondering if it makes sense to keep using him (in Gemstone Cavern now).

He is powerful, but stops learning new skills around that time. In the revised edition, he starts at Level 40 with his skills already learned.
