When you start the cubes and pick what you want to bring with you as far as the relics and artifacts, and you finish one cube do the things go back into the pot for the next crew to choose from?

No, they don't.
What I did is, I went through the first cube and took all items and a good group and explored it. Then I went back out and restarted the cube with only doggy and recruited animals. I went straight to the end of that cube and finished it.
The second one I believe can also be done quite easily without items, so I kept them all for Katie's group. You can't, however, leave the second one too after exploring or you'll have to start all over with doggy's group.

Okay thank you for the advice. Sounds like a great idea to explore it first. I'll give it a try like that.

Oh, and if you go with recruits, make sure to save often because if the recruit dies it's gone and can't be brought back.
