Yes, all 13 were needed since you can't enter the arena if you are not 13. But still, who could have been replaced by basically anyone (even some random folk), given how poor and thin and commonplace his or her contribution was?

Some food for thought:
* Hirado:
He is not too strong and never has a game-changing moment.
* Jezabel:
Not strong, drags everybody down all the time, and like Hirado, didn't influence any outcome positively.
* Jack 'n James:
They divert Marine from her quest and can't even bring power once they have joined. Lost most of their fights and didn't contribute much to the progress of the quest.
* Salome:
Like Jack 'n James, really, she eats a lot of Marine's time with little gain in the end.
* Wolfgang:
He joined and... that's it?
* Merline:
She tries a lot but in the end, fails everything.

Feel free to add your own suggestions.

Wolfgang - not very useful, not very "inspiring" for the others. And weak in The Showdown.

I'm gonna add myself to the "Wolfgang" train. And come on Indy, you are actually asking why?

I pity Hirado for that actually. You say he never had a game-changing moment, but that is because he NEVER had the chance to. Poor guy, we barely played with him. And he is the 2nd warrior to join! Ancient Temple in MM1 was him only time to shine for real. Turquiose Cave in MM2, Orcish Fortress in MM3, The road from Tabutu to Grand Rift in MM4. Poor thing... Especially in MM4. He joins after the tribal temple, you go to the Grand Rift and he stays behind... But then again, I can understand why Indy. Must be hard to write all those poetic stuff.

But the others, nah. James has my undying respect for being able to beat Merryll. And we can't have all strong characters now can we?

But Hirado had some more time in MM5 too.
I liked your comment about James har har. I wonder what's the maximum nb of wins he can ever achieve?

Hmmm, true that he was more in MM5, but he still wasn't talking...

And hmmm, I'll have to test that out.

Hirado is also the one who goes to see the Sage and lets Marine know about the final duel.
