I'm not sure what I'm missing, but I'm at that crack in the cliff where it says "we need to find a way to open it...it must be nearby". I then click on the rock to the left of it and it says "there is a switch under the rock" and Jerret says something about people leaving things, not very security-minded. And that's it. I still haven't "opened" the crack and the switch is apparently still under the rock, but I can't seem to "flip" the switch or whatever it is that I have to do with it!
Help?!?!

To get that switch to work you must have collected the quest from Johanth in Mellowkeep. The dialogue that you're getting is what happens when you haven't got the quest.
