Before you catch any boats and are clearing out the pirate headquarters, there is a 'sort-of' chest which gives a message along the lines of "Locked, and I can't find a key anywhere". Does this chest have a key or is it just to 'tease' us into thinking it is important? (And if it has a key, where please?)

Nah, there's nothing there. Those vertical, side-facing, non-standard chests aren't meant to be opened. They're there to indicate atmospheric storage; that is, they're just meant to be chests that aren't for the player, but that work as part of the worldbuilding. There are a few more like them as you carry on.
