If I'm too weak to defeat it before entering the mansion, will I be able to encounter it later? How? This is my second go-through and I want to get this thing.

You can encounter it anytime (as long as you're still in its area of course).

I did it when I'd finished the mansion, so I had all the equipment and had leveled up.

Doing it straight on is a bit hard altho not impossible if your charas are well levelled up ^^

To make it appear you just have to walk around for a while.
