Then you must have chosen to give up with Ralf's party. If you don't and fight your way through his part, things will be quite different!

I wasnt playing with a guide book and didnt see anything about giving up
with Ralphs party.

At the area where his party started off, if you leave the place you get to choose whether to go back to the town (if you want to rest or buy more stuff) or give up. As far as I know giving up is the only way to get the bad ending.
