You have to inspect the hot rock near the cave entrance, inspect the pool, and push the hot rock until it is next to the pool, then wait. If you did everything correct, there should be smoke rising from the pool while you're waiting.

the game has been touched in ages so I don't think there could be a glitch at this point, but who knows?...

I replayed this a couple of months ago with the most recent version, and I had no problem with it, so if there is a glitch then it must be a totally random one.

There's a plume of white smoke that comes off the lava pool, but it was there all along. I started this section over, inspected the rock and the lava pool, pushed the rock. Random says Just a few more goes. I push it again and nothing happens. I go to the front side of the rock and try to push from there, but he just says I hate moving this thing. Sarah says You should let me do it, baby. Nothing else happens.

Looks like I wasted my money on the game, since I'm stuck. . .

First touch the left bottom part of the WATER pool (not lava).
Random will start by saying something like "The water in this pool looks pretty hot..."
Then push the rock next to it. And wait.
