Stuck in Secret room 8

I have defeated the Rogue Croc and had the boatman take me to the secret room (the one with the church). Now I can't get back to the boatman. I don't have air sandals yet. I can't jump except to the big rock. What did I miss?

Huh? Why can't you reach the boatman. I haven't played MM series for a while but you should be able to.

This time it did work. I would go down to the boatman, click, nothing would happen. I thought I had to jump up to the lamp, but could only jump to the middle rock/island. Little jump feet showing, but couldn't jump to the others. I guess you need air sandals for that. Could not tuch the crystals either. very strange.
