Millipuf nest

I'm replaying the original Laxius Force and am working on Chap 3, Mt. Zulle. I've gone through the millipuf nest and found the missing hunter, but can't find a way out of the cave to go back to town. The walkthrough says the path on the left through the cave takes you to the exit. It does take you back to where you came in, but I can't figure out how to leave it. Does anyone remember?
