You just need to click on the monster to engage it in battle. Defeat it and you will clear the path.

I think you need to clear the puzzle first if you haven't already. Just look carefully at the ground and you'll notice some platforms jutting out that roughly form the shape of an arrow: ->

You need to follow the path of the arrows from the staircase to the orb device without leaving the path or taking any dead-end detours. I don't think anyone ever made a map of the area, so you'll need to figure it out on your own.
