I've got Siemen at level 66 and he can't open the trapped chest. I'd like to go on to Kondler and come back to the caves at some point. Is that possible?

Nope, you can't leave the Ultai before you finished all the caves.
Do you have the Universalis Key? It improves Seiman's ability to disarm chests. Maybe he can do it when you equip it on him.
