What causes absent status?

I was in one of the demon battles, the last I think and 3 of the 4 people in the party were absent and the one that wasn't absent was an animal. Needless to say, I got creamed.

change your party around, absent is caused by a bad personalityu matchup (like an egotistical person (jordan) will be absent against the demon of ego)

demons can control subjects that are predominant in the power they master.
it's particularly visible with the demon of ego and the demon of pride.
