Zara. Because I've been using her more than any other character on my second playthrough.
She might not be the strongest one, but she's really good with weapons.

Oh, now I'm facing an ethical quandary! If you really don't know, should I tell you, because you might then decide that it's a bug and take it away which would make levelling up longer and that would be distressing.

Oh well, here goes.
There is a random element to it, but I reckon there is about a 40% chance of it working. If you finish off a group in one round, and the last one to hit is Pacha using his 3-strike Battle Dance skill, then you can get double exp. It is most common with the 4 assassins hiding as one; that gives 1320exp and the 3 assassins hiding as one with a cat; that gives 1150 IIRC. I've got it with lots of other enemies e.g in Ol'Slainthe Castle, the dragon on Horizon Island (sweet getting 23000+ in one go). Other characters do manage this from time to time; it appears to be only when it's a multi-hit physical skill, it never works with magic spells.

But it would be wonderful if it were to stay. I've given a lot of time to thinking strategically about the composition of the party when levelling up, and on who does what, depending on their skills, strength, speed etc., so that I can finish fights in this way. It would be hugely disappointing to lose this chance.

Hmmm it doesn't make any sense though, and it can alter the gameplay quite a bit.

When it comes to levelling up I think it it makes a lot of sense, because it makes it just that bit quicker. It's not as if one can do it with every encounter, and even those where you can get it you don't get it all the time. I don't think it alters the game in any dramatic way. It's not something that one can use in going through a dungeon, for example, when you have to pick your party using different criteria. If it happens in ordinary play I look on it as something equivalent to getting a critical hit - a definite bonus, but not something to be relied on.

Nagam was my most reliable warrior, especially once he got some decent weapons.
Barbara also in the top three, and once I equipped Clea with the (ack! what was it called?) Five Flower something-or-other with all the status effects (!) I often let her lead the party, she was so effective.
