Years ago, a local amusement park had a new roller coaster called The Steel Phantom. Once seated, the passengers lowered a U-shaped restraining bar over their heads and torsos to keep them secure during the ride. Well, this ride was so rough that all passengers were required to take off their earrings before they were allowed to embark, due to heads repeatedly slamming against the (padded) bar on either side.
So what's the point? Simply put, earrings can be an unforeseen hazard. The bigger and heavier they are, the more likely they are to pose risk. A good martial artist can grab his opponent's earrings, I would imagine, and rip them off or do something equally painful with them. Does the Sage know this? Are there rules against doing such things?

It's not a very ethical move for sure.
But Marine's earrings are very tiny. Not easy to grab at all especially for the likes who'd like to try that "method", such as Merryll.
