What is the deal with books? It's probably blindingly obvious, but not to me. Should you equip a character with a book in order for that character to learn specific spells on leveling up? I can't find info on this...

Books are a type of equipment (weapon) and do not teach any skills. Only certain characters are capable of equipping books (for example, the priestess).

In this game, books are simply like normal weapons (swords, staves etc.)
So they behave exactly the same except they are called books and also that most of them have fixed damages (like a random number between 100-200 for instance)
