It might just be too early. Where are you in the game main story?

Yup, this sidequest isn't solved until much later in the game, and the providential intervention of some dude.

thanks- re started game as I thought I may have missed some quests

by the way - Karim the bucaneer not so near ... is the first boss that killed my party almost instantly and took me by surprise in craaaaazy mode ... He gets to attack first and if he manages to use 2 tsunami in a row (don't know what the attack is called but it looks like a tsunami) - my party is wiped out immediately .... but if he is merciful and decides to not use one tsunami - I destroy his ass too with one attack from Busho and one from Caius - low HP for a boss but hits very hard

I got caught completely by surprise by the ambush, and got wiped out. So what I did was before leaving the place that leads to the ambush (how about that for avoiding spoilers!) I used the 3 Energy Potions that I'd just found so that my AGI was right up at the very beginning. Even though I got hit with the tsunami (all-party), I was able to wipe him out with one Mace of Death. His minions were then a push-over.

Something like that .... in my mode he didn't die from one mace so I had to use Busho's finisher or hammerhold.
BY the way littlebro ... I somehow managed to get the fertilizer in time and my red lilac is still alive
