it might not be someone in white bridge, but another town over--- (but for some reason i'm thinking one of the kids in town)

i like to stay very single minded when i do quests that way i don't forget who it was that gave it to me. normally i can go right there, and right back and complete it

I don't believe it's a quest item, just a freebie for interacting with the NPC, like getting a free healing potion. There is a witchlike NPC walking around the east side of White Bridge who will give you a coin for a carrot cake, but I never found anyone needing an apple pie.

this game is so much fun! but now a new question - i have now have experience scrolls and elixirs (stats enhancements) -
are they permanent? and are they needed for side quests throughout the game?

Elixirs and scrolls are permanent so you use them as you please

elixirs id use immediately.
scrolls you can use later--- be mindful-- if you stack exp gain gear, the scrolls give MORE XP

so if Bob is gaining 1000% exp from everything, and then you use the scrolls.... +1000%

A shop in town sells bait, also when you chop down trees they like to give you bait as a bonus'

off the top of my head- i don't think anyone sells magical essence.
i believe you need to find those by killing monsters in certain areas.
