Witches Manor "small crack"

I have taken up permanent residence in the witches manor since I have been unable to locate the small crack leading to the spider room and yet another key. I would appreciate if someone could lead me to it in words that a septugenarian could understand, for example, where is it in reference to the painting that ogles Sarah? Much thanks in advance!
PS I think the game is wonderful!!

When you go through the middle door in the entry hall, you'll be confronted with a sort of cross shaped area a few steps up. To the left is the butcher room, and to the right is a switch. Stand next to it, face up and press enter.
