In the walkthrough it says it convinced Magdelena after the arvendel dome event. Is there a reason you cannot do it before?

Im not sure, but I think ''almost sure'' you lose the quest and you can't do anymore.

The Magdalena quest can only be completed if you have a party of beautiful members. When you first get the quest, Louis with his ugly ol' mug is a forced party member.

That's why the quest can't be completed right away.
