Any clues as to how or what ones needs in order to jump over spans, gaps, gulches, etc? I keep looking for some magic boots, a pogo stick or wings and I haven't come across anything that will get me over those openings.

Saw that someone mentioned Hermes Shoes on another posting. Any clues as to the location of these snappy shoes?

Yes, such shoes do exist. You get to them late in the game, after visiting a god.

I have no idea if you're at the stage when you can get the jumping shoes. What keys do you have and what kinds of rocks can you break?

hermes shoes is located in the gods territory. cant recall, but i think its the 2nd god. but in order to proceed here, you need BANJO as offering to one of the gods. once you have banjo, you should proceed here already.
