I went through the first cube just to get to know it and see what I can recruit. When I came out again many of my old recruits had vanished! +::O_o

Is that normal?

Yep, some recruits leaves the party when you enter the cubes.

But you can recruits some enemies like Piki and the Alien Alchemist inside the cubes, which can be very useful...

Do you know how many creatures can be recruited? I think I've missed a few.

In the cubes or in the entire game?

In the cubes I think that only the Alien Alchemist and Piki.

Second time I played I recruited a total of 36 including the main characters.

Can you tell me what I've missed?
I have Katie, Nestor, Hans, James, erm .... the cow, the horse, the butterfly and both wolves (sorry I renamed them all and don't remember their original names).
And I recruited the Bear, Bulba, Cockatrix, Ocean Crab, Ruins Guardian, Golem, Gripphyn, Hydra, Nord, Enmora, Rosa, Wild Boar, Blazing Eagle, Crystalgul, Gumpy, Zombie, Shrum, Piki, Alien Alchemist and the Fox.
So these are just 29.

Don't know because I saved in the end and don't have a save before the end to show all recruits.

29 plus the 4 humans from the start so you are only missing 3 (that I know of) - razorback, coocooroo and toadstill

I can't find the sick flower anywhere in the giant sequoia. I've recruited the correct party member to help me heal him, but I've wandered through the tree multiple times to no avail.
