does anybody know what the total number of mushrooms is you have to collect before you have them all or is there some kind of conversation when you have them all?

After having them all you get the mission completed message and bonus, I believe.

no, firefly i think you are a bit of wrong. after collecting all, you have to go to the camp. the mission doesn't automatically finish when you have all the mushrooms

You'll know if you havn't got them all, one of the Heros says they're not leaving without all the mushrooms.

Yes, I wasn't quite sure I remembered right
