I am confused about what these orbs are that I am collecting. What do they do?

Each Orb is linked to an attribute (strength, mind etc.)

And you can trade the collected Orbs in Guilds for permanent points.

Just keep collecting every one you see. As you progress, you'll find guilds that increase strength, speed,
mind and resistence when you trade them in. Save the mind ones for a while though. They may be needed for a different quest.
