It's a singular word and it's a frequent gift around the end of the year! Not specifically related to winter/summer seasons or religious festivals such as xmas!

the time of the year hint is NOT directly related to a holiday AT ALL, not thanksgiving, new years, or anything like that. BUT, that hint is the most important part of the clue.

by the way, ive never given, received, or even heard of this gift being given at christmas (but my family isnt very christmassy, so it might just be my family), but i can see why it would be useful at the end of the year

(i wont give away anything else)
