My guess; the game takes place in a dream, but not just any dream. This dream is special and/or different for some reason, to the point where what happens in the dream actually matters in some way, and isn't just the result of eating expired cheese, or getting a nasty bump on the head. :razz:

Maybe characters live in their own world but step into peoples dreams to change things in the dream world hence changing the real world
