In the first area to explore, if you want the screen to be brighter (because it's night-time), go to the Options Menu and switch "Less Dark" ON.
From the same menu you can also switch fast battles ON.

Forgot to say, another important thing. It's written in the instructions manual (guide sample), but you may miss it.
In the opening sequence, the 6th and last question is about picking the difficulty mode. Make sure to choose according to your preferences.
1. EASY
2. NORMAL
3. HARD
4. MANIAC (= very hard, aka Tomas' mode
