Which difficulty mode did you pick?
The cat reflects several technics based on their element. First thing is to know which technic you can and should use against it.

Shaapashaa reflects Thunder, and absorbs Fire and Holy.

I somehow managed to kill the cat with my first blow - I could not have been more surprised and a bit incredulous that it was possible with a boss.
