Where'd the Orcs go??

I'm embarrassed to say, after playing LFII numerous times, I'm having a problem. In chapter 5
when I am trying to enter the orc fortress at the beginning of the game in order to go to the
beach area, I do not get attacked by Orcs so that I can enter it. I'm wondering if this could be
because I'm using Windows 7 and a netbook this time. Or, I could have just screwed up!! Yikes!!
Any suggestions?

On top of my memory (!), I'd say you need to switch ON a lever in the ancient city.
