No idea what to do next

Glad to hear you're progressing. It's a very 'thinking' game and you "dash (headphone)" lots from place to place.

If you get stuck, read the postings on the forum and you may see your way clear earlier than posting a new question. Lots of discussions have been made. BUT... do ask anytime you're stuck and someone will surely come to your aid.

Kinda.
In fact I recommend to explore a dream fully and then if you get stuck, move to another one.
Items you find in dream A can help in dream B and so on. ^^

I agree for the first hour or so the concept makes the game very interesting. The next three and a half hours have mostly been wandering around in maze after maze, wondering what to do.

I like that the game is non-linear, but it's a little too non-linear for me. I keep endlessly going back to exploring huge maps I've been all through several times already, trying to find something new, something I missed. It's starting to get frustrating and boring.

The last thing I got was the Chinese gong, but I can't figure out what to do with it. The more time I spend revisiting places I've been to trying to find a new area, the less interested I am in continuing the game.

Also, the death traps in London and New York (meteor) do not add anything good to the game. Not to mention that in meteor area, the autosave will save you in the process of dying, so you have to go back to your last non-auto (manual) save, or you just keep dying over and over.

You can exit the meteor dream using the Headphones, unless your save is just before the meteor rain.

If you have the chinese gong you need to head to the toy house in london!

Meteor area of NY is just a teaser! I checked by bypassing all those glitches with hour glasses until I reached a dead end!
However, you should definitely buy the items that lady has to offer and then exit with your headphones!
