How to find/get into the swamp

OK I have the rebel, we have been everywhere except where the red tigers guard a cave that I can see. I even went back to a old save and went all the way back to the canoe, cant figure out how to get into the canoe out on the "rocky path".

I have the ebony stick, but not the broken helmet, and The Rebel wouldnt do anything with just the stick, is this important?

Other than giving up, I cannot figure out how to go after the crocodiles. Please help. Is there a certain place I can walk into the swamp from the houses??
